Health Professions Advising Center

Who We Are

As the primary pre-health advising office on campus, our dedicated, professional staff has a diverse set of experiences and access to many resources to help students prepare to apply for admission to a health professions school/program.

Charles Scruggs, M.A.
Director and Advisor

Greetings and Welcome to the Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) at UCR.  As the director, I work closely with the campus community to identify needs and to serve as an advocate for students on the road to pursuing a career in the health professions.  In addition, I work closely with the Western Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (WAAHP) and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) to stay up to date on best practices and changes within the health professions field.

Since 2004, I’ve worked in higher education with experiences in admissions, academic and pre-professional advising, student conduct, and residence life. I enjoy working on a college campus and it’s a privilege to be here at UCR. A native of Ohio, I hold a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Arts degree both from the University of Cincinnati.

In my free time, I enjoy—biking, hiking, sky-diving, and domestic/international travel

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Amber Nicholson, M.Ed.
Assistant Director and Advisor

Welcome to UCR and HPAC! We look forward to working with you along your journey toward becoming a health care professional.  We assist students in determining appropriate pre-health courses, defining their interests, engaging in meaningful extracurricular activities, and overall creating a competitive application for a health professions program.

Since 2008, I have worked in various student affairs positions, all with the overarching mission of assisting students in identifying and achieving their goals. As an Inland Empire native and UCR alumni, having completed both a B.S. in Biology and M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration and Policy at UCR, I understand and support the unique needs of our students.  I have worked hard to build strong relationships with students and make a positive impact on student success, persistence, and professional opportunities beyond college.  I really enjoy working with students one-on-one and advising provides me with the opportunity to serve as a resource to students while developing relationships throughout their college journey.

In my free time I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family – including my dog Lily!

Nicholas Notti, B.S.
Staff Assistant

Hello and welcome to our website! My name is Nicholas and I'm one of the staff assistants here at the HPAC office. I recently graduated from UCR with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Neuroscience. As a student here, I have been involved in a variety of on and off campus clubs and organizations. I have experience with many aspects of the Riverside community as well, through community service, research, and clinical opportunities.

Determining how you wish to develop into a professional, whether as a health professional or not, is a life long process. If there's one thing I've learned through my journey, it's that you never stop learning! There are many avenues to achieve your goals, and all of us here at HPAC are here to help you however we can! I hope you stop by our office and take advantage of our resources!

When not working at HPAC as a staff assistant, you can find me involved on campus through the UCR Mini Medical School, or volunteering at the Riverside Free Clinic. I am also in the process of applying to medical schools as well! In my spare time, I love to travel with friends (as there are many great options in California!), play sports, and keep up with games and technology!

Taylor Le, B.S.
Staff Assistant

My name is Taylor and I am happy to be one of the staff assistants at HPAC! I have just graduated from UCR with a B.S. in Biochemistry. This campus, through academics and on- and off-campus activities, has shaped me to become involved in the Riverside community in various ways. Specifically, I am appreciative that my research, mentorships, community service, and clinical experiences have helped me understand my passion to help others.

Understanding what your career aspirations are can be extremely difficult. One of the mantras that I live by is that you should pursue anything and everything that interests you, regardless of it pertaining to the health field or not. Every person is unique, and finding your unique qualities will help you determine your life goals. HPAC provides the resources on organizations, groups, and activities that can help you along this journey!

Outside of working as an HPAC staff assistant, I am a scribe at Loma Linda University Medical Center's Emergency Department and am in midst of applying to medical schools. I also serve as a volunteer in Kindling Intellectual Development and Riverside Free Clinic, organizations that let me work with the underserved population of Riverside. My hobbies include tennis, "food adventures," photography, conversational Spanish, and napping.
